Project: Residential Village – Vartemiaki – St. Petersburg (Russia) – Competition of Ideas: Mentioned Project
with ARCHITECT Sara Bandinelli

The studio was asked to participate in a competition for ideas for the construction of a residential village for the new generation of "rich" Russians. The project is based on the use of natural materials (wood and terracotta: natural, enamelled, colored in paste) and technical features aimed at saving energy (ventilated roofs and walls, solar panels). The project area extends north of the city of St. Petersburg, in the Vartemiaki area, near the border with Finland. The design idea takes into account the proximity to the aforementioned Finland whose territory is rich in lakes and rivers, in fact the characteristic of the almost flat land or with gentle hills allows you to play on the altitudes so as to enliven the village that will rise here and make it always part of the territory. Streams and pools of water, fountains and artificial lakes are inserted in the area. The project contrasts an entrance area called a square, facing the existing village so as to be a focal point and meeting place for the entire population, with an area located completely opposite from this where a large lake with an equipped beach is the rest area and tranquility. The village develops between these two. The service building (office, commercial) overlooks the square, surrounded by a single pool of water as if it were born from it. The architectural guidelines of the common areas are those of the Italian Renaissance, a reference to the architecture of the nearby city of St. Petersburg. While for the new homes, (variable sizes from 100 to 250 square meters) called Tan House, Econom Class and Business Class, we have chosen a single "façade skin". This external texture solution metaphorically symbolizes that the new homes being directly in contact with the ground are an integral part of it and therefore always present in the area. The forms recall the constructive styles of the Lapland huts revisited in a modern key, built with the aforementioned natural materials so as to be integrated into the environment while respecting the genius-loci of the area. The three housing typologies are inserted within the village where a main road system with a primary function contrasts with a secondary one for accessing the individual houses. Equipped pedestrian paths allow you to live inside the village forgetting the cars for getting around. In doing so we want to create an exclusive village where it is possible to enter only on foot, where the central square returns to being a distinctive social element of aggregation, where the stress of everyday life is left outside and where children can play in complete tranquility.
